Cryotherapy

Also known as "cold therapy," it is a technique used to destroy abnormal skin cells. It is the application of extreme cold to treat both benign and malignant lesions by the freezing and re-thawing process. Its goal is to decrease cell growth and reproduction, but also to kill viruses causing some skin conditions. Cryotherapy can treat a variety of benign skin growth such as warts, moles, skin tags, some pediatric conditions (like Molluscum Contagiosum) but also precancerous lesions and some skin cancers. Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy targeted skin growths while preserving the surrounding skin areas from injury. It's considered a procedure with a very low amount of side effects.

Can warts be left untreated and resolve themselves?

Untreated warts can grow and spread into clusters of several warts. They spread by touching, scratching or even by contact with skin shred from another wart! Occasionally, they will resolve spontaneously, but it is rare.

What is the difference between OTC freezing supplies and Liquid Nitrogen?

Liquid Nitrogen has a much lower temperature and therefore is much more effective.

What are contraindications to cryotherapy?

Undiagnosed suspicion for a Melanoma lesion should be biopsied first, but there are very few other contraindications to cryotherapy.
